Coast Unified School District

What Makes Us Unique?

Coast Unified School District is located on California’s beautiful Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County. The District serves the grade K-8 student population of Cambria, San Simeon and surrounding rural areas and the grade 9-12 students of that area and the town of Cayucos. The District has one K-5 elementary school, one 6-8 middle school, one comprehensive high school, and one continuation high school.

Smaller class size means each student receives the attention they need from the teacher. Students are able to connect more closely with peers which leads to lasting friendships. The field trips offered at the schools are rich and varied and promote learning and team building. Students in grades 6-8 use district-provided iPads while students in high school have district-provided Chromebooks. Extracurricular activities provide for a well-rounded educational experience. Staff and parents are committed to helping all students achieve the highest standards.

The Governing Board, staff, parents, students and community are committed to educational excellence. The District enjoys a sound budget based on basic aid status, collaborative union and management relationships, excellent support service departments and strong academic success as evidenced by three California State Distinguished School awards, most recently Santa Lucia Middle School in 2019.

Coast Union High School has received two U. S. News and World Report Silver Medal awards, and Santa Lucia and Coast Union were named star schools on the 2017-18 California Honor Roll by the Educational Results Partnership and the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence.

Foundation at Hearst Castle

Our History & Mission

For almost 35 years, The Foundation at Hearst Castle (formerly Friends of Hearst Castle) has supported the conservation and restoration of “La Cuesta Encantada” through membership opportunities and special events, always aiming to inspire and empower future generations of visionaries.

A Museum Like No Other

The estate popularly known as Hearst Castle is a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark located on the Central Coast of California, about 250 miles north of Los Angeles.

It was designed by architect Julia Morgan between 1919 and 1947 as a residence for William Randolph Hearst, who died in 1951.

Hearst Corporation deeded the estate to California in January 1958 and Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument® opened to the public that summer. The Castle serves as the key economic engine of the Central California Coast. Since then, the estate, and its considerable collection of art and antiques, has been open for public tours.

Despite its location far from any urban center, the Castle welcomes around 700,000 visitors annually, making it a top tourist destination in California.
